    AMNA AND YAVER'S ITALIAN ADVENTURE

It all started with a crazy idea of a walking holiday in Europe. We were inspired by the scenery of the movie ‘The Way’ set on the Camino de Santiago, an ancient pilgrimage route from France to Santiago de Compostela. Then a conversation with a friend and the suggestion that we consider the Via Francigena in Italy.

In 990, Sigeric the Bishop of Ramsbury made the pilgrimage to Rome to be ordained Archbishop of Canterbury. He documented the journey on his return. The way was older than this – we think it must have been there since Roman times, but his was the first documentation. It became a regular pilgrimage route through to the 15th century and then fell into disuse. It was rehabilitated in the 1990s, but is still much lesser known (and probably less well signposted) than the Camino. Only 1200 people walked the route in 2012.

We’ve been thinking and planning for more than six months now. We’ve chosen to walk the last roughly 340km from San Gimignano in Tuscany through to Rome in 15 stages. This is Amna’s pilgrimage to Rome after living with a family that can talk of nothing but Italy and atonement by her husband who has never taken her there.
