Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed with H.E. Ambassador Sun Weidong at the discussion on 'Belt and Road Initiative'

An interesting and informative discussion titled ‘The Belt and Road Initiative: Towards a Community of Shared Future’ was held at the Sheesh Mahal, Serena Hotel on Wednesday, the 3rd of May. The event was jointly organized by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China and the Pakistan-China Institute, and featured Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed (Chairman Pakistan-China Institute and CPEC Parliamentary Committee) and H.E. Sun Weidong (Ambassador of China to Pakistan) as the speakers.

Senator Mushahid Hussain began the discussion by highlighting China’s unique achievement in battling poverty: in the last 35 years, over 700 million Chinese people have been lifted out of poverty. This is the biggest global transformation of human lives in history.

The Senator then shared with the audience that someone once asked him to describe the One Belt, One Road initiative in one sentence. He responded by describing it in three words: inclusiveness, connectivity and cooperation. It is inclusive in the sense that it is not directed against any country, and in fact includes various countries, cultures and continents. Secondly, it connects numerous countries of the world through rail and road links, as well as through the sea. Lastly, it aims for mutual cooperation and benefit, so that no country is left behind, and there are shared gains for all.

The Senator added that the scale of the Belt and Road initiative is monumental, as it will link 100 countries, 70 percent of the world’s population, 55 percent of the world’s GDP, and 25 percent of the world’s trade. He further added that CPEC is the flagship project of OBOR, and the city of Gwadar is in turn the centerpiece of CPEC.

The Senator stated that the balance of socio-economic power is shifting from the west to the east. The 21st century is the Asian century, in which China’s peaceful development will be a source of strength and progress – not only for Asian countries, but the world at large.

H.E. Ambassador Sun Weidong began his speech by stating that China-Pak friendship is a model of state-to-state relations, nurtured by the people of the two countries. He announced that on the 14th and 15th of May, Chinese President Xi Jinping will host the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in Beijing, which will be attended by leaders from 28 countries. There will be representatives from 110 countries, with participation from 61 international organizations.

The Ambassador added that the Belt and Road initiative has injected a new momentum into the ancient Silk Road and has created a strong connection between Asia, Europe and Africa. More than 100 countries are now a part of this initiative, covering over 4.3 billion people, with a total economic output of more than 21 trillion US dollars.

The Ambassador further added that the fate of Pakistan and China has become closely linked together through the Belt and Road initiative. He thanked the people of Pakistan for their continued cooperation and efforts in supporting the Belt and Road initiative, and working towards the mutual benefit of both countries.

Senator Mushahid Hussain concluded the discussion by recalling the famous quote of the Quaid-i-Azam from 1947: “Pakistan is the pivot of the world, placed on the frontier on which the future position of the world revolves”. He pointed out that today, the vision of the Quaid is proving to be correct, because Pakistan is acting as a pivot in the connectivity of the Greater South Asia.

As the new year begins, let us also start anew. I’m delighted to extend, on behalf of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and in my own name, new year’s greeting and sincere wishes to YOULIN magazine’s staff and readers.

Only in hard times can courage and perseverance be manifested. Only with courage can we live to the fullest. 2020 was an extraordinary year. Confronted by the COVID-19 pandemic, China and Pakistan supported each other and took on the challenge in solidarity. The ironclad China-Pakistan friendship grew stronger as time went by. The China Pakistan Economic Corridor projects advanced steadily in difficult times, become a standard-bearer project of the Belt and Road Initiative in balancing pandemic prevention and project achievement. The handling capacity of the Gwadar Port has continued to rise and Afghanistan transit trade through the port has officially been launched. The Karakoram Highway Phase II upgrade project is fully open to traffic. The Lahore Orange Line project has been put into operation. The construction of Matiari-Lahore HVDC project was fully completed. A batch of green and clean energy projects, such as the Kohala and Azad Pattan hydropower plants have been substantially promoted. Development agreement for the Rashakai SEZ has been signed. The China-Pakistan Community of Shared Future has become closer and closer.

Reviewing the past and looking to the future, we are confident to write a brilliant new chapter. The year 2021 is the 100th birthday of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Pakistan. The 100-year journey of CPC surges forward with great momentum and China-Pakistan relationship has flourished in the past 70 years. Standing at a new historic point, China is willing to work together with Pakistan to further implement the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, connect the CPEC cooperation with the vision of the “Naya Pakistan”, promote the long-term development of the China-Pakistan All-weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership with love, dedication and commitment. Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the founding father of Pakistan said, “We are going through fire. The sunshine has yet to come.” Yes, Pakistan’s best days are ahead, China will stand with Pakistan firmly all the way.

YOULIN magazine is dedicated to promoting cultural exchanges between China and Pakistan and is a window for Pakistani friends to learn about China, especially the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. It is hoped that with the joint efforts of China and Pakistan, YOULIN can listen more to the voices of readers in China and Pakistan, better play its role as a bridge to promote more effectively people-to-people bond.

Last but not least, I would like to wish all the staff and readers of YOULIN a warm and prosper year in 2021.
