When it comes to food I’m pretty fussy, and just like everyone else, I’m always looking for a place in Karachi that has value for money. One such place is Easy by Fatso’s, a restaurant owned by Maha Jawed of Fatso's Mini Caterer, whose aim is to experiment and innovate classic comfort food staples.

Located on Khayaban-e-Shahbaz, in the Defence area, Easy’s major drawback is that it is always crowded. Customers either line up for their signature custom-made donuts, or their decadent lunches. But if you want to visit Easy for lunch, you must prepare yourself for a 30-minute wait before you can get a seat. Additionally, it isn’t the most pocket friendly restaurant since a meal can cost around Rs. 1500-2000. But it is definitely worth a try, with generous servings and ample to choose from.

Easy is not just a food lovers dream come true, but also an Instagrammer’s paradise. Each corner of the restaurant is so aesthetically pleasing, whether it is the simple black stools or the warm wooden interior. The restaurant is painted in millennial pink hues, which compliment the delightful display of artistic donuts. But the centerpiece is a bright neon sign popping above the counter that reads, “Who run the world?”, a nod to female empowerment and strength.

Easy’s taglines, ‘A Friendly Carb-Factory’ and a ‘Hub of Comfort Food’ is spot on, as the restaurant offers both delectable desserts (not just donuts) and a wide range of comfort food. Examples on the menu include Karachi Style Hot Dogs, Ricotta and Rocket Pizza, Mac and Cheese, Burgers, Bao Sliders and a refreshing Rose Lemonade to beat the heat of Karachi.

My favorite dish is the Karachi Dog, which flaunts Easy’s playful and innovative side. This is a tandoori battered beef dog with garlic mayo, masala cheese and some slims dust. The hot dog is a bombardment of desi flavors in an American-styled snack, and each bite never disappoints.

Next on my list was their scrumptious, cheesy and crispy pepperoni pizza, that was simply the perfect deep dish pizza. The pizza is cut into squares, and topped with a combination of brick cheese, mozzarella and a mouth-watering tomato sauce, that is guaranteed to blow you away, especially on a bad day.

Another item on their menu that truly delivers is their beef burger! This burger is enough to convert the harshest of critics, including myself. The burger consists of a thick, grilled beef patty, coated in a divine beef fat and onion sauce. It is topped with a distinctly sharp cheddar slice, and garnished with crunchy rocket leaves. Furthermore, Easy’s Rose Lemonade will simply brighten your day. Served in a very exquisite glass bottle, this drink is just sweet enough, with a bit of a refreshing tang. The very chilled lemonade blends perfectly with the food, and helps to wash everything down.

Last but not least, their signature donuts. These range from Rs. 180 – 200, and sell out as quick as they come, and not surprisingly so. Each donut has a unique decoration, and one can even order custom-made donuts for special occasions. They are crisp and fresh on the outside and moist on the inside, thanks to Jawed’s relentless pursuit to perfect her recipe. I highly recommend their glazed, mocha almond and red velvet donuts!

Easy is a vibrant cafe that has taken the fast food to another level in Karachi. The only thing I’d want from Easy is a bigger place to fit more people. But the small, cozy atmosphere perfectly compliments the food. The place is perfect for people who love comfort food, but are also looking for some experimentation and creativity. This place has become my go-to place, and I would recommend everyone visiting Karachi to at least pop by Easy, and grab one of their donuts.

As the new year begins, let us also start anew. I’m delighted to extend, on behalf of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and in my own name, new year’s greeting and sincere wishes to YOULIN magazine’s staff and readers.

Only in hard times can courage and perseverance be manifested. Only with courage can we live to the fullest. 2020 was an extraordinary year. Confronted by the COVID-19 pandemic, China and Pakistan supported each other and took on the challenge in solidarity. The ironclad China-Pakistan friendship grew stronger as time went by. The China Pakistan Economic Corridor projects advanced steadily in difficult times, become a standard-bearer project of the Belt and Road Initiative in balancing pandemic prevention and project achievement. The handling capacity of the Gwadar Port has continued to rise and Afghanistan transit trade through the port has officially been launched. The Karakoram Highway Phase II upgrade project is fully open to traffic. The Lahore Orange Line project has been put into operation. The construction of Matiari-Lahore HVDC project was fully completed. A batch of green and clean energy projects, such as the Kohala and Azad Pattan hydropower plants have been substantially promoted. Development agreement for the Rashakai SEZ has been signed. The China-Pakistan Community of Shared Future has become closer and closer.

Reviewing the past and looking to the future, we are confident to write a brilliant new chapter. The year 2021 is the 100th birthday of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Pakistan. The 100-year journey of CPC surges forward with great momentum and China-Pakistan relationship has flourished in the past 70 years. Standing at a new historic point, China is willing to work together with Pakistan to further implement the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, connect the CPEC cooperation with the vision of the “Naya Pakistan”, promote the long-term development of the China-Pakistan All-weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership with love, dedication and commitment. Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the founding father of Pakistan said, “We are going through fire. The sunshine has yet to come.” Yes, Pakistan’s best days are ahead, China will stand with Pakistan firmly all the way.

YOULIN magazine is dedicated to promoting cultural exchanges between China and Pakistan and is a window for Pakistani friends to learn about China, especially the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. It is hoped that with the joint efforts of China and Pakistan, YOULIN can listen more to the voices of readers in China and Pakistan, better play its role as a bridge to promote more effectively people-to-people bond.

Last but not least, I would like to wish all the staff and readers of YOULIN a warm and prosper year in 2021.
