Zoe Viccaji at the annual event of the Asian Study Group

    Zoe Viccaji

The Asian Study Group is a non-profit organization, formed in the 1970s to enable its members, both foreign and local, to learn about Pakistan and its society. It held its annual event on the rolling lawns of the Turkish Embassy. By 7 pm the evening air had turned cool, and the lawns were packed with an expectant audience. The Ambassador of Turkey, H.E.Ezlan, and Parveen Malik, the Patron and President respectively of the ASG, spoke briefly.  A long drawn out quiz competition, giving of awards, and dinner followed.

When Zoe Viccaji and the Inline Band finally took the podium at 9.30 pm, they had the audience electrified from the word go. This tall, slim, prodigy with a magnetic personality,is a natural. Her forte is jazz, and she belted out in a strong voice such classics as New York, New York, Summertime, a couple of Nazia Hassan’snumbers, Abba and many more. With her first album about to be released in both India and Pakistan, the strife torn city of Karachi has given birth to a star. When she took a break, the talented Inline Band, boys of Goan origin, played Bob Marley and Santana classics.

The ASG had organized a delightful and memorable evening for Islamabadites.
