    Breakfast at Alamgir Hotel

Ah, the aromatic allure of Karachi's bustling streets, where the day begins with the tantalizing scent of chai and paratha wafting through the air. For us Karachites, there's nothing quite like starting our day with a hearty plate of lachha paratha (crispy flat bread cooked in clarified butter) and a steaming cup of chai (well-cooked tea with milk), and when it comes to satisfying those cravings, Quetta Alamgir Hotel in Bahadurabad stands as a beacon of culinary excellence.

Nestled amidst the chaotic charm of Bahadurabad, Quetta Alamgir Hotel may appear like just another dhaba (roadside cafe) but make no mistake, it's a culinary gem unlike any other. While countless dhabas dot the cityscape, each boasting their own rendition of chai and paratha, Alamgir's lachha parathas hold a special place in the hearts (and stomachs) of Karachi's food enthusiasts.

What sets Alamgir apart from the myriad of imitations that have sprung up across the city? It's not just about the parathas, but the experience. From the crackling sound as you break into a fresh paratha, to the rich aroma of freshly brewed chai, every visit to Alamgir is a sensory delight.

    Chai Paratha at Alamgir Hotel

The loyal throngs of customers, who flock to Alamgir from dawn till dusk, are a testament to its unparalleled charm. For many, it's a tradition passed down through generations, a ritual as ingrained in their daily routine as the rising sun. And let's not forget about the chai. Made with the finest tea leaves and fresh milk, each sip is a journey of warmth and comfort, a perfect complement to the indulgent parathas and the best wake-up juice a Karachi-wala (people who live in Karachi) can ever ask for.

And here's a little secret for those who can't make it to Bahadurabad (a locality of the city of Karachi): Alamgir now offers frozen lachha parathas, a convenient alternative for those who crave a taste of Karachi's finest from the comfort of their own homes. While they may not quite capture the magic of dining at the establishment itself, they certainly come close.

In a city where dhabas reign supreme, Alamgir Hotel stands as a shining example of culinary excellence. It's not just about the food but the memories created, the traditions upheld, and the community fostered. So, here's to Alamgir Hotel, the undisputed champion of chai and paratha in the heart of Karachi. Alamgir has been around for a long time, even before the revival of dhaba culture in the city, where people now go to cafe-type facilities for overpriced chai and artisan parathas. They are the places that feed Karachi’s masses, from labourers to college students with limited pocket money, and office goers.

    Lachha Parathas at Alamgir Hotel

Now, let's delve deeper into the essence of Quetta Alamgir Hotel, a haven for paratha aficionados and chai connoisseurs, alike. Stepping into Quetta Alamgir Hotel is like stepping back in time, to an era where simplicity reigned supreme and flavor was king. The ambiance is unassuming yet inviting, with wooden tables and chairs arranged haphazardly, and the air thick with the irresistible aroma of freshly cooked parathas.

But it's the parathas themselves that steal the show. Made with love and expertise, each paratha is a work of art, meticulously crafted to perfection. The dough is rolled out by hand, stretched thin and layered with ghee, before being cooked on a hot griddle until golden and crispy. The result? A paratha that is light yet satisfying, with just the right amount of crunch and a melt-in-your-mouth texture that is simply irresistible. Whether enjoyed on its own or paired with a steaming cup of chai, Quetta Alamgir Hotel's parathas are a culinary experience like no other.

    Lachha Parathas being prepared

One of the defining features of this dhaba is their affordable menu. From traditional favorites like biryani to other slightly newer dishes, the dhaba does offer it all at lunch but honestly, no one goes there for the full meal, it is a spot solely for chai paratha lovers.

In the larger scheme of things dhabas play a significant role in shaping Karachi's culture and economy, providing employment opportunities for many and contributing to the city's vibrant culinary scene. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, dhabas remained resilient, serving as beacons of comfort and familiarity in uncertain times.

In conclusion, dhabas are more than just places to eat, for they are embodiments of Karachi's rich culinary heritage, serving as hubs of community, culture and camaraderie. From the iconic parathas of Alamgir Hotel to the cozy ambiance of neighborhood chai dhabas, these humble eateries continue to nourish both body and soul, one chai and paratha at a time. Cheers to the enduring legacy of dhaba culture in Karachi!

As the new year begins, let us also start anew. I’m delighted to extend, on behalf of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and in my own name, new year’s greeting and sincere wishes to YOULIN magazine’s staff and readers.

Only in hard times can courage and perseverance be manifested. Only with courage can we live to the fullest. 2020 was an extraordinary year. Confronted by the COVID-19 pandemic, China and Pakistan supported each other and took on the challenge in solidarity. The ironclad China-Pakistan friendship grew stronger as time went by. The China Pakistan Economic Corridor projects advanced steadily in difficult times, become a standard-bearer project of the Belt and Road Initiative in balancing pandemic prevention and project achievement. The handling capacity of the Gwadar Port has continued to rise and Afghanistan transit trade through the port has officially been launched. The Karakoram Highway Phase II upgrade project is fully open to traffic. The Lahore Orange Line project has been put into operation. Reviewing the past and looking to the future, we are confident to write a brilliant new chapter. The year 2021 is the 100th birthday of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Pakistan. The 100-year journey of CPC surges forward with great momentum and China-Pakistan relationship has flourished in the past 70 years. Standing at a new historic point, China is willing to work together with Pakistan to further implement the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, connect the CPEC cooperation with the vision of the “Naya Pakistan”, promote the long-term development of the China-Pakistan All-weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership with love, dedication and commitment. Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the founding father of Pakistan said, “We are going through fire. The sunshine has yet to come.” Yes, Pakistan’s best days are ahead, China will stand with Pakistan firmly all the way.
