In the heart of artistic expression at the Arts Council Theatre Academy, the stage came alive with Farhan Alam Siddiqui's play, Acchay Bacchay (Good Kids). With a compelling narrative aimed at the impressionable age group of 14 to 16-year-olds, the play seamlessly wove together entertainment and social messaging, addressing the allure of harmful habits such as smoking cigarettes and consuming mawa, gutka and chalia.

Directed by the talented Farhan Alam Siddiqui, who also took pride in being the mentor of the cast, the play delivered its message with finesse. Siddiqui, reflecting on the creative process, shared that being able to deliver socially relevant messages to children through theatre has been an absolute pleasure. He emphasized the unique power of theatre to connect with young audiences, fostering awareness in a way that is both impactful and enjoyable.

Siddiqui's dedication to instill awareness in his students and guide them towards meaningful storytelling was evident throughout the production. The play successfully struck a balance between engaging the audience with laughter, suspense and thought-provoking social commentary. As the director, Siddiqui expressed his joy in witnessing the growth of his students, both as actors and individuals, as they navigated the complexities of the narrative.

The cast, comprising budding artists from the Arts Council Theatre Academy, brought freshness and enthusiasm to their roles. Siddiqui's pride in directing his own students was palpable, and this sentiment undoubtedly added a layer of authenticity to the overall performance. The young actors, sharing their experiences, expressed profound admiration for being part of a play that tackled such important social issues.

The excitement radiating from the cast was infectious, creating a dynamic energy that resonated with the audience. In interviews, the actors spoke passionately about the responsibility they felt in conveying a message that could potentially shape the choices of their peers. This sense of purpose added depth to their performances, and connected them on a personal level to the gravity of the subject matter.

The addition of song and dance made the play even more engaging

One of the notable aspects of Acchay Bacchay was its reliance on improvisation. This creative choice added a layer of spontaneity and authenticity to the play, allowing the actors to connect more deeply with their characters and the audience. The freedom of improvisation showcased the raw talent of the young performers, and underscored their ability to adapt to different situations within the narrative.

The play effectively targeted the age group most vulnerable to the seductive allure of harmful habits. The script tackled the desire to appear 'cool' by indulging in smoking mawa, gutka and chalia, vices that often find their way into the lives of adolescents. The narrative didn't resort to a preachy tone, but instead utilized humor, suspense and relatable situations to convey its message. This approach ensured that the audience remained engaged while internalizing the critical social commentary.

The two-show daily schedule, with performances at 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM, allowed for accessibility to a wider audience, including school groups. This thoughtful scheduling accommodated the target demographic, and contributed to the play's outreach.

The set design and technical aspects of the production were commendable. The stage became a canvas for the unfolding narrative, with well-designed props and lighting that enhanced the overall visual experience. The seamless coordination between the technical team and the actors contributed to the immersive quality of the play.

Acchay Bacchay succeeds not only as a theatrical performance, but also as a powerful medium for conveying a vital message. Siddiqui's directorial vision and the dedication of the young cast were instrumental in bringing the narrative to life. The play's success lies in its ability to entertain, while subtly instilling a sense of responsibility in its young audience.
