    Dazhai Village, the eco-friendly utopia

Imagine walking through the streets of Paris, with the majestic Eiffel Tower before you and rows of classical buildings on either side. That is an experience most travel buffs would love to have at least once in their lives, as you would expect to have French cafés and bakeries all around you. However, if instead of French names on the storefronts, you see a whole lot of Chinese labels, it would make you feel like you're in a fantasy, where Paris has turned into a Chinese city.

China is indeed a land of diversity, from its landscapes to its cultures and traditions. Within this vast nation also lie cities that stand out for their unique, albeit often strange characteristics. The city of Tianducheng is a perfect example of this. It is a city that is designed and built to copy Paris, complete with life-sized replicas of historic buildings and monuments, cobblestone streets and baroque hotels. That is not the only unusual city in this enormous country. There are plenty of other cities in China that stand out due to their ingenuity, beauty or eccentricity.

Fengdu Ghost City: Where the Dead Roam

Fengdu, located on the banks of the Yangtze River, has the reputation as a "Ghost City" of China. Steeped in mythology and folklore, this ancient city is believed to be the realm of the dead in Chinese folklore. It would be difficult to tell that something unusual is taking place here, mainly because of the brightly colored buildings and lush green mountains. Visitors can explore eerie temples, adorned with statues depicting scenes from afterlife, and learn about the intricate beliefs surrounding death and afterlife in Chinese culture.

    Zhongdong: The Underground Village

Deep in the rugged terrain of Shaanxi province lies Zhongdong, an ancient village carved into the mountainside. What makes Zhongdong truly remarkable is its underground dwellings, where residents have lived for generations, sheltered from the elements. Exploring the narrow passageways and homes in caves, offers a fascinating glimpse into a way of life that has endured for centuries. In many ways, it seems spookier at first, compared to Fengdu, but the caves are full of life and activity, making for a truly unique experience.

    Florentia Village: The Italian Escape

Just a stone's throw away from Beijing and Shanghai, Florentia Village transports visitors to the streets of Italy with its picturesque piazzas and Renaissance-inspired facades. Modeled after the Tuscan town of Florence, this luxury outlet mall offers a shopping experience unlike any other, surrounded by architectural marvels reminiscent of Italy's artistic heritage. Indulge in Italian cuisine, shop for designer brands, and immerse yourself in the timeless beauty of Florentia Village. Everything from the architecture to the lamp posts will remind you of Italy, creating a surreal experience for anyone who visits.

    Suzhou: The Venetian Dream

Suzhou, known as the Venice of the East, evokes the charm and allure of Italy's Venice. Visitors can glide along picturesque canals in gondolas, passing under arched bridges and past colorful facades that mirror those of the Venetian lagoon. However, they don't try to replicate their Venetian counterparts. Instead, these are ancient Chinese structures, some of which have existed for hundreds of years. The city's narrow alleyways, UNESCO-designated gardens, and its globally famous noodles and dumplings offer an experience that's unmatched in most parts of the world.

    Honghe: The Rainbow Rice Terraces

In the southern province of Yunnan, the Honghe Hani Rice Terraces paint a vibrant mosaic across the landscape. Carved into the hillsides by the Hani people over centuries, these terraces form a breathtaking patchwork of colors, particularly during the planting and harvesting seasons. Visitors can trek through the terraces, interact with local farmers, and marvel at the ingenuity of traditional agricultural practices. You won't be able to find many places in the world that have as unique a landscape as Honghe, making it a must-visit place.

    Dazhai: The Eco-Friendly Utopia

Tucked away in the mountains of Guizhou province, Dazhai stands out for its innovative approach to sustainable development. This rural town has transformed itself into an eco-friendly utopia, with lush green landscapes, clean air and a commitment to preserving the environment. Travelers can immerse themselves in the local culture, participate in eco-tourism activities, and witness firsthand the harmonious coexistence of man and nature. Winding alongside the Cha River, the village looks like a place that has jumped straight out of a fantasy.

Whether you think these cities are weird, interesting or both, they offer a glimpse into the diverse and captivating tapestry of China. Whether it's exploring abandoned villages, delving into ancient folklore, or having Chinese dumplings while surrounded by Parisian architecture, these unusual cities promise unforgettable experiences for travelers seeking to uncover the hidden gems of the Middle Kingdom.

As the new year begins, let us also start anew. I’m delighted to extend, on behalf of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and in my own name, new year’s greeting and sincere wishes to YOULIN magazine’s staff and readers.

Only in hard times can courage and perseverance be manifested. Only with courage can we live to the fullest. 2020 was an extraordinary year. Confronted by the COVID-19 pandemic, China and Pakistan supported each other and took on the challenge in solidarity. The ironclad China-Pakistan friendship grew stronger as time went by. The China Pakistan Economic Corridor projects advanced steadily in difficult times, become a standard-bearer project of the Belt and Road Initiative in balancing pandemic prevention and project achievement. The handling capacity of the Gwadar Port has continued to rise and Afghanistan transit trade through the port has officially been launched. The Karakoram Highway Phase II upgrade project is fully open to traffic. The Lahore Orange Line project has been put into operation. The construction of Matiari-Lahore HVDC project was fully completed. A batch of green and clean energy projects, such as the Kohala and Azad Pattan hydropower plants have been substantially promoted. Development agreement for the Rashakai SEZ has been signed. The China-Pakistan Community of Shared Future has become closer and closer.

Reviewing the past and looking to the future, we are confident to write a brilliant new chapter. The year 2021 is the 100th birthday of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Pakistan. The 100-year journey of CPC surges forward with great momentum and China-Pakistan relationship has flourished in the past 70 years. Standing at a new historic point, China is willing to work together with Pakistan to further implement the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, connect the CPEC cooperation with the vision of the “Naya Pakistan”, promote the long-term development of the China-Pakistan All-weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership with love, dedication and commitment. Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the founding father of Pakistan said, “We are going through fire. The sunshine has yet to come.” Yes, Pakistan’s best days are ahead, China will stand with Pakistan firmly all the way.

YOULIN magazine is dedicated to promoting cultural exchanges between China and Pakistan and is a window for Pakistani friends to learn about China, especially the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. It is hoped that with the joint efforts of China and Pakistan, YOULIN can listen more to the voices of readers in China and Pakistan, better play its role as a bridge to promote more effectively people-to-people bond.

Last but not least, I would like to wish all the staff and readers of YOULIN a warm and prosper year in 2021.
