Nestled against the backdrop of the Margalla Hills, Dera Daari provides a peaceful escape where nature and fine dining come together

Some restaurants are known for their food, while others are remembered for their atmosphere. Dera Daari manages to leave an impression through both, offering an experience where traditional Pakistani hospitality, authentic flavours and thoughtfully designed spaces come together under one roof.

Islamabad has long been recognised for its scenic beauty, orderly streets and growing culinary landscape. Over the past decade, the capital has welcomed an increasing number of restaurants that cater to every palate, from contemporary cafés to fine-dining establishments. Yet, amid this diversity, there remains a special place for restaurants that celebrate Pakistan's rich culinary traditions without compromising on comfort or modern hospitality. ‎

    The Perfect Juicy Chicken Steak

Dera Daari is one such destination.

Situated in Sector C-12, opposite the Northridge Society, the restaurant has established itself as more than just another place to dine. It presents itself as a gathering place, a destination where families reconnect over generous meals, friends spend long evenings sharing stories, and celebrations unfold in an atmosphere that feels both elegant and familiar. The name itself reflects this philosophy, symbolising a place of belonging where food becomes the centrepiece of togetherness.

From the moment visitors arrive, it becomes evident that Dera Daari is designed to offer more than a conventional restaurant experience. The property combines a restaurant, café and dedicated event spaces, allowing guests to enjoy everything from casual coffee meetings to elaborate family celebrations in a single location. Rather than separating these experiences, the venue integrates them naturally, creating an environment that feels welcoming throughout the day.

The restaurant's architecture and outdoor setting strike a balance between rustic charm and contemporary design. Wooden elements, open-air seating and landscaped surroundings create a relaxed ambience that encourages guests to slow down and savour their time. During the day, natural light fills the dining areas, while evenings bring a softer atmosphere enhanced by warm lighting that complements the outdoor environment. The result is a setting that appeals equally to families, couples and groups of friends looking for a memorable meal away from the city's daily routine. ‎

Dera Dari's Signature Fish & Chips

At the heart of Dera Daari lies its greatest strength: a menu deeply rooted in Pakistani cuisine while remaining broad enough to accommodate a wide variety of tastes.

The kitchen celebrates traditional recipes that have been enjoyed for generations. Karahi, one of Pakistan's most beloved dishes, occupies a prominent place on the menu with options ranging from classic chicken and mutton to beef and desi murgh preparations. Each variation reflects the slow-cooking techniques and aromatic spice combinations that have made karahi a staple of Pakistani dining. Alongside these classics, guests can also explore chef-inspired gravies, handis and regional specialities that showcase the diversity of local cuisine.

For barbecue enthusiasts, Dera Daari offers an equally impressive selection. Beef Bihari Kebab, Chicken Malai Boti, Turkish Kebab, Mutton Chops, Kandhari Grilled Chicken and mixed BBQ platters demonstrate the restaurant's commitment to charcoal-grilled flavours that remain central to Pakistan's culinary identity. The smoky aroma drifting from the grill is often enough to tempt diners before they have even opened the menu.

One particularly distinctive aspect of the menu is its Shinwari selection, inspired by the simple yet flavourful cooking traditions of north-western Pakistan. Lamb karahi, rosh and dum pukht dishes highlight the philosophy of allowing quality ingredients to speak for themselves, using minimal seasoning while preserving the natural richness of the meat. These regional offerings introduce diners to flavours that are both authentic and deeply satisfying.

The menu extends well beyond traditional favourites. Guests looking for lighter meals will find salads, vegetarian dishes and seafood options, while rice selections include biryani, Kabuli pulao and other comforting classics. Freshly baked naan and traditional breads accompany nearly every meal, ensuring that every dish remains true to the communal style of Pakistani dining. ‎

The spacious outdoor seating invites guests to savour authentic flavours while enjoying panoramic evening views of Islamabad.

What makes Dera Daari particularly appealing is that it refuses to limit itself to a single dining occasion. Early risers can begin their day with a traditional breakfast featuring murgh chanay, beef nihari, halwa puri, omelettes and freshly prepared parathas. Later in the day, the café comes alive with artisan coffees, frappés, smoothies, mocktails and desserts, making it equally suitable for an afternoon meeting or a relaxed evening with friends. From an espresso crafted by trained baristas to a refreshing mint margarita enjoyed outdoors, every visit offers something different.

Desserts provide a fitting conclusion to the dining experience. Kulfi, gulab jamun, kheer and seasonal gajar halwa celebrate familiar Pakistani sweets, while ice cream and café beverages offer lighter alternatives for those seeking a simple indulgence after a hearty meal.

Beyond its food, Dera Daari has also positioned itself as a venue for life's special moments. The restaurant features dedicated spaces for private dining, corporate gatherings, birthdays, anniversaries and engagement celebrations. Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all approach, the management works to tailor menus and seating arrangements according to the nature of each event, allowing guests to focus on the occasion rather than the logistics. ‎

Beyond traditional cuisine, the restaurant's café menu offers handcrafted burgers, refreshing beverages and casual dining favourites for every occasion.

This versatility reflects an understanding that restaurants today serve a broader purpose than simply providing meals. They have become social spaces where important conversations take place, milestones are celebrated and lasting memories are created.

Hospitality remains another defining element of the Dera Daari experience. While excellent food may attract first-time visitors, attentive service often determines whether they return. The restaurant emphasises creating a welcoming atmosphere where guests feel comfortable from the moment they arrive until the end of their visit. This approach aligns naturally with the spirit of traditional Pakistani hospitality, where generosity and warmth are considered just as important as the meal itself.

Its location, slightly removed from the busiest commercial districts, further enhances its appeal. Away from the congestion of central Islamabad, diners can enjoy a quieter setting without travelling far from the city. The surrounding landscape provides a sense of openness that complements the restaurant's relaxed atmosphere, making it especially attractive during pleasant evenings when families and friends gather outdoors. ‎

In many ways, Dera Daari represents a broader trend within Pakistan's evolving restaurant culture. Diners increasingly seek experiences that combine authentic cuisine with thoughtfully designed spaces and meaningful hospitality. Rather than simply serving food, successful restaurants now create environments where people genuinely enjoy spending time.

Dera Daari achieves this by remaining rooted in tradition while embracing the expectations of modern diners. Its carefully prepared desi cuisine, inviting ambience, versatile event facilities and welcoming service come together to create a destination that feels both familiar and contemporary.

For residents of Islamabad, it offers an opportunity to rediscover the comfort of traditional Pakistani flavours in an environment designed for today's lifestyle. For visitors exploring the capital, it provides an introduction to the warmth, generosity and culinary richness that define Pakistani hospitality.

In a city where dining options continue to expand, Dera Daari has found its own identity not by chasing passing trends, but by celebrating timeless values. Here, every meal is an invitation to gather, every table encourages conversation, and every visit serves as a reminder that some of life's finest moments are still shared over good food.

As the new year begins, let us also start anew. I’m delighted to extend, on behalf of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and in my own name, new year’s greeting and sincere wishes to YOULIN magazine’s staff and readers.

Only in hard times can courage and perseverance be manifested. Only with courage can we live to the fullest. 2020 was an extraordinary year. Confronted by the COVID-19 pandemic, China and Pakistan supported each other and took on the challenge in solidarity. The ironclad China-Pakistan friendship grew stronger as time went by. The China Pakistan Economic Corridor projects advanced steadily in difficult times, become a standard-bearer project of the Belt and Road Initiative in balancing pandemic prevention and project achievement. The handling capacity of the Gwadar Port has continued to rise and Afghanistan transit trade through the port has officially been launched. The Karakoram Highway Phase II upgrade project is fully open to traffic. The Lahore Orange Line project has been put into operation. The construction of Matiari-Lahore HVDC project was fully completed. A batch of green and clean energy projects, such as the Kohala and Azad Pattan hydropower plants have been substantially promoted. Development agreement for the Rashakai SEZ has been signed. The China-Pakistan Community of Shared Future has become closer and closer.

Reviewing the past and looking to the future, we are confident to write a brilliant new chapter. The year 2021 is the 100th birthday of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Pakistan. The 100-year journey of CPC surges forward with great momentum and China-Pakistan relationship has flourished in the past 70 years. Standing at a new historic point, China is willing to work together with Pakistan to further implement the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, connect the CPEC cooperation with the vision of the “Naya Pakistan”, promote the long-term development of the China-Pakistan All-weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership with love, dedication and commitment. Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the founding father of Pakistan said, “We are going through fire. The sunshine has yet to come.” Yes, Pakistan’s best days are ahead, China will stand with Pakistan firmly all the way.

YOULIN magazine is dedicated to promoting cultural exchanges between China and Pakistan and is a window for Pakistani friends to learn about China, especially the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. It is hoped that with the joint efforts of China and Pakistan, YOULIN can listen more to the voices of readers in China and Pakistan, better play its role as a bridge to promote more effectively people-to-people bond.

Last but not least, I would like to wish all the staff and readers of YOULIN a warm and prosper year in 2021.
