The King of Pop was an incredible dancer.

The true measure of an artist isn’t found in record books. Sales figures fade, prestigious awards gather dust, and achievements are surpassed. An artist’s real impact lies in the emotions they evoke, the experiences they create, and the legacies they leave behind. Yet when discussing numbers and records, it is impossible to rival Michael Jackson’s unparalleled accomplishments.

We could spend hours recounting Michael Jackson’s achievements in music and entertainment. From winning 8 Grammy awards in one night to releasing best-selling albums and receiving the Grammy Lifetime Achievement, the King of Pop built up a remarkable resume. ‎

Michael Jackson was the youngest member of the Jackson 5

However, his true legacy reaches beyond nominations, awards, and record-breaking statistics. Nearly two decades after his shocking and controversial death, Michael Jackson is remembered as a global cultural phenomenon whose music transcended borders, united communities, and inspired generations of artists to follow in his footsteps.

Born in August 1958 in Indiana into a musically gifted family, Michael Joseph Jackson seemed destined for greatness from an early age. As the youngest star of the Jackson 5, he got his first taste of global fame through hits like I Want You Back, ABC, and Never Can Say Goodbye. However, even among such extraordinary talents, Michael stood apart. His remarkable vocal range, magnetic stage presence, technical precision, and God-gifted ability to convey deep emotion set him apart as a child performer and hinted at greater success. ‎

Music videos gained a new identity because of Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson’s rise as a solo artist is widely considered a turning point in pop culture history. His journey began with Off the Wall (1997), a collaboration with legendary producer Quincy Jones, that put him on the map. The album featured hits such as Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough and Rock With You that showcased his vocal versatility and artistic maturity. ‎

Thriller catapulted Michael Jackson to Superstardom

Nonetheless, his transformation into a global Superstar came in 1982 with the release of Thriller. The impact of both the album and title track cannot be understated. Following its release, music videos became more than just promotional tools. Thanks to Jackson’s efforts, these productions were now treated as sophisticated and creative cinematic storytelling tools. Tracks like Thriller, Billie Jean and Beat It transcended music. In addition to topping charts, they became cultural touchstones that influenced fashion, lifestyle, and dance. ‎

Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson revolutionized pop

Beyond entertaining millions and soothing hearts with his music, the King of Pop used his voice as a powerful instrument for social change. His landmark collaboration with Lionel Richie, We Are the World, raised millions of dollars to help combat famine in Africa and demonstrated the unifying power of music. Long before climate change became a mainstream concern, Jackson was urging audiences to care for the planet through songs like Earth Song. In Black or White, he challenged prejudice and condemned the senselessness of racism, calling for a more tolerant and inclusive society. Meanwhile, Man in the Mirror remains one of his most thought-provoking works, encouraging listeners to look inward and become the change they wish to see in the world. As musical trends evolved, Michael Jackson continually reinvented his sound, but his commitment to addressing social issues through his art never wavered.

If Michael Jackson had one enduring adversary, it was the tabloid media. Catapulted to global fame at a young age, he lived much of his life under relentless public scrutiny, where every gesture and personal decision became headline material. Over the years, controversies mounted and serious allegations overshadowed his artistic achievements, fueling intense media attention and public debate.

Throughout these turbulent periods, Jackson consistently maintained his innocence and publicly offered his side of the story, while remaining composed in many of his responses to critics. At the same time, supporters argue that the media often overlooked his extensive charitable work and humanitarian efforts. Through initiatives such as inviting sick and disadvantaged children to Neverland Ranch and donating millions to charitable causes, Jackson sought to give others the joy and opportunities that he felt were missing from his own childhood.

The King of Pop earned this moniker by revolutionizing the genre of pop music. Long before cinematic music videos became the industry standard, he transformed them into storytelling masterpieces that inspired generations of artists, including performers like Lady Gaga. Epic stage performers like Beyonce have wowed audiences across the globe, but Jackson set the benchmark for live performances decades ago. Perhaps most importantly, Jackson seamlessly fused music and dance into a single artistic expression, making choreography an essential part of a pop artist’s identity. Artists like Bruno Mars and Justin Timberlake embody his style today. ‎

    Controversies marred Michael Jackson’s reputation

Michael Jackson’s story is one of unparalleled brilliance, extraordinary influence, and enduring complexity. Records may one day be broken, and new stars will inevitably emerge, but few artists have ever left such a profound mark on music, culture, and the human imagination. His voice crossed borders, his performances transcended language, and his message resonated with millions across generations.

As the new year begins, let us also start anew. I’m delighted to extend, on behalf of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and in my own name, new year’s greeting and sincere wishes to YOULIN magazine’s staff and readers.

Only in hard times can courage and perseverance be manifested. Only with courage can we live to the fullest. 2020 was an extraordinary year. Confronted by the COVID-19 pandemic, China and Pakistan supported each other and took on the challenge in solidarity. The ironclad China-Pakistan friendship grew stronger as time went by. The China Pakistan Economic Corridor projects advanced steadily in difficult times, become a standard-bearer project of the Belt and Road Initiative in balancing pandemic prevention and project achievement. The handling capacity of the Gwadar Port has continued to rise and Afghanistan transit trade through the port has officially been launched. The Karakoram Highway Phase II upgrade project is fully open to traffic. The Lahore Orange Line project has been put into operation. The construction of Matiari-Lahore HVDC project was fully completed. A batch of green and clean energy projects, such as the Kohala and Azad Pattan hydropower plants have been substantially promoted. Development agreement for the Rashakai SEZ has been signed. The China-Pakistan Community of Shared Future has become closer and closer.

Reviewing the past and looking to the future, we are confident to write a brilliant new chapter. The year 2021 is the 100th birthday of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Pakistan. The 100-year journey of CPC surges forward with great momentum and China-Pakistan relationship has flourished in the past 70 years. Standing at a new historic point, China is willing to work together with Pakistan to further implement the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, connect the CPEC cooperation with the vision of the “Naya Pakistan”, promote the long-term development of the China-Pakistan All-weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership with love, dedication and commitment. Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the founding father of Pakistan said, “We are going through fire. The sunshine has yet to come.” Yes, Pakistan’s best days are ahead, China will stand with Pakistan firmly all the way.

YOULIN magazine is dedicated to promoting cultural exchanges between China and Pakistan and is a window for Pakistani friends to learn about China, especially the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
